Sample Menu after surgery
Consider Meal Supplements such as: Ensure® or Glucerna® (for diabetics)
Breakfast
Fruit Juice: Tomato or Apple Juice
Smooth entrée: Scrambled eggs with cheese
Cooked or dried cereal (soaked in milk) 1 cup instant Farina, or Oatmeal.
Beverage Coffee or Tea (Room temperature, NOT Hot)
Lunch
Soup: 6 oz. vegetable soup
Starch: 4 crackers dipped in the soup to soften
Smooth entrée: 1 cup low fat cottage cheese
Fruit: ½ banana and ½ canned peaches
Protein supplement Carnation Instant Breakfast mixed with milk
Dinner
Starch: 1 cup cooked spaghetti noodles or chicken soup
Smooth entrée: 4 oz lean ground beef in ½ cup tomato sauce
Vegetable: ½ cup mashed winter squash
Dessert :½ cup pudding made with milk
Other Menu Suggestions
Fruit juice, pudding, egg salad, yogurt, soft cheeses, Jell-o, soups (luke warm, a cooked scrambled egg can be mixed in with soup), milk shakes (DO NOT use a straw), smoothies, ice cream, cottage cheese, canned fruits, instant breakfast, bananas. A high protein diet with vitamin C, vitamin D, omega 3 and zinc supplements promotes healing.
Suggestions for “Firmer” Foods
Cooked cereal or dried cereal (soaked in milk); cooked vegetables such as:peas, potatoes, squash, carrots; pasta/macaroni; eggs; ground beef; noodle casseroles.
Thing To Avoid
Popcorn, nuts, chips, taco shells, seeds, and any other granular or hard foods that could irritate the treated area. Also, avoid highly seasoned foods, i.e., strawberries and tomatoes. Avoid carbonated drinks if possible.
